Holiday Season 2016

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season! After many holiday parties and festivities, I got off work on December 16th with two glorious weeks off! It is my favorite break of the year, so I had to celebrate accordingly.

Therefore....I went on a cruise to the Caribbean! My sister in law and I went out of Fort Lauderdale via Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas for a relaxing 6 day adventure.

Grand Cayman Island

Costa Maya, Mexico

Cozumel, Mexico

I lounged A LOT, got a lot of sun, played a lot of trivia , ate a lot of food and read a lot of (3) books!

Then I spent Christmas with my favorite niece, June!

We snuggled a lot...

Since then, I have visited some friends, met a lot of babies, watched TV, run and will be enjoying a low key New Years! Get ready for my year end book list coming tomorrow!

Blog Motivation & Holiday Happenings

I have been struggling with blogging motivation lately. I was looking through my posts from the last few years (especially last year) and I blogged much more than I do now. I wish I could say I have the same desire to do that now...but I don't. I have contemplated keeping this blog up and running or taking a step back and trying to become more private (I feel like since I started blogging, social media/internet has really taken the place of so much of what this blog was for me in terms of saying how I was feeling and documenting parts of my life). I find that instagram is my new "daily life" social media avenue. Also, the less I am on the internet/blogging, the happier I actually am, but I do enjoy having some sort of personal diary to look back on, which is essentially what this blog has been for me. I have some posts planned for the remainder of this month, but I may take a step back in 2016...we'll see!

It didn't take baby Libby long to knock over my small tree!
Updates for me as of now...I finished my 4th semester of PhD work! It was a really nice semester between supervising master's level students and taking a Statistics class. It was also very easy semester for me, and the spring looks to be much more busy, so I have definitely been spoiled! I am a little antsy about needing to do more research though. Presenting and teaching is not a problem for me (I am getting paid to teach adjunct next semester- woot woot! and I have a big presentation coming up in March in Montreal), but I do need to align myself with a professor to do more research. However, I really have enjoyed this PhD experience so much that I almost don't want to ruin it with "feeling" like I have to do anything. It has been much more of a personal growth and learning for fun experience (imagine that-> school can be fun?!). I have ideas of what I want to do when I finish, but I am not in a rush about anything. Even if I graduate and stay doing things similar to what I am doing now, it will have been worth it. As I get older I realize what a privilege it is to be able to afford to continue my education and how learning is a wonderful/insightful thing, and I want to keep it that way:) I am exactly halfway done with classes now! I have one and a half years to go until dissertation time...it's flying by!

Besides finishing classes, I have been playing with my new kitty (baby Libby) and her brother and celebrating the holidays! I have also been running more casually since I don't have any big races on the calendar for a while. It has been nice to run a more normal amount (aka not 15+ miles at a time), but I still enjoy my Saturday morning group runs!

Work Holiday Party!
She is so sweet when she sits still!

The Jefferson Hotel decorated for Christmas!
I have one more day of work before my two weeks off (!!!) and many more parties this weekend (I have three alone Saturday night)!. I am heading to the Outer Banks for a few days early next week before Christmas, and then family comes in afterwards. I am very much looking forward to the break! I still wish I could take a bigger trip during these weeks off, but it is a hard time of year to travel with people and for good deals. Don't worry- I have a spring and summer full of great trips that I am sure I will document even if I blog much less:)

What funs things have you been up to?

#Thankful

I am so sad the long Thanksgiving weekend is over! It was full of family, food, drinks, games, running and fun! Here is a snapshot of some of the events...

After a leisurely morning/afternoon on Wednesday (I love how we get the day off work), I picked up my new kitten! And ,no, she still does not have a name. I am simply calling her "baby cat."

Still no name!!! She got so much love from her family over Thanksgiving!
Then on Thanksgiving morning, my siblings and I ran our annual Turkey Trot 10k! It was hilly, but I did a course PR and the course is beautiful. However, every year I do this race I am always surprised at how hilly it actually is...I need to remember this better.

We spent the rest of the day hanging out, eating and playing cards/doing tequila shots:)

Friday was gorgeous, so we did a walk along the river and into Belle Isle. We also went to Triple Crossing Brewery and an awesome dinner place called Family Meal before going home and playing more cards and taking more tequila shots...

Saturday was full of football and small business Saturday, and we even got started on our 2nd puzzle of the week. I think we are obsessed.

On Sunday I introduced my kitten to her big brother, Tony Romo, with limited luck and got to see my friend Emily's new baby!

High school friends!
As least Romo is staying in the room instead of running away...
The next few days will sure be an adventure in new kitten adjustment at my place (any tips?)! And the next few weeks are full of fun holiday events, and I am excited about being done with classes for the semester in a short 9 days (December 8th!) :) Hopefully work will go quickly this week, and I am entering it feeling very thankful for the wonderful people in my life! Too bad I did not sleep as much as I intended to...why does that always happen?

How was your Thanksgiving?

Happy Honda-ween!

I had a very exciting Halloween weekend!

First off, I had my 12 mile training run on Saturday morning that I did at goal marathon pace, so I was very excited about that (and the fact that I didn't have to run 20 miles)!

Secondly, after I got back from D.C. on Tuesday, my car started to make some odd rattling noises under the hood. This is my 2004 Saturn Ion that I bought after college with only 20k miles. She now has 108k miles, and has some "quirks," if you will. The coolant light has been on for over a year (the coolant is fine), the left windshield wiper is not on correctly (I had to get the bulb replaced last year and it has never been the same), I can't always get the key out of the ignition due to an electronic issue that never does it when I take it to the dealer so they won't fix it, her sunroof drains sometimes leak in my trunk and passenger floor, her hubcaps keep popping off, her paint is faded and the inside seats are stained, and her front lights keep getting a film on them due to a moisture issue, so I don't get great vision in the dark. Nevertheless, she is paid off and the taxes on her are super cheap! However, I told myself I would no longer put money into her because I am an adult and can afford a new car, so when the rattling started I was pushed to finally pull the trigger.

I have wanted a Honda Civic forever, so I did some research at the end of last week on prices and reviews, and went to the dealership to test drive. Well, of course I loved the car and due to my awesome credit score, the financing is very reasonable (.9% APR) and I was able to get what I think is a good deal for a 2015 since the 2016's are coming out now.

So at about 3:30 yesterday, I walked away from ROLYWA...(I am not keeping the same plates due to the vanity/UVA fees I got sick of paying every year)...

to this beautiful unnamed vehicle:) My first brand new car EVER.

Isn't she pretty and shinny?! And she has a back up camera, side camera, Bluetooth (and all that fancy jazz), alloy wheels and is alllll black. I was able to put down a solid down payment and my monthly fees aren't bad at all. Now, I have never in my life had a car payment, so we will see how fast I pay her off just so I don't have one anymore:) BUT I do recognize that my money is worth more earning interest in the bank than paying her off as fast as I can, and since I still want to travel and put money into retirement funds, and am paying for school, I am going to try to not pay her off super-fast, just so I have money for other things:) Welcome to adult financial decisions, right?! But can we say "road trip" fast enough for my two-week winter break coming up? There is some money saved right there versus flying somewhere (my gas mileage will be amazing)! See, she is paying for herself already:)

Afterwards, it was time to celebrate Halloween, so I borrowed some clothes to dress as the Easter Bunny and went to my friend's house for our version of Halloween- aka wine and a potluck!

In character as a Ninja Turtle, Egg, Bunny and Robber

Friends on Halloween:)

I just love Stewart (the dog) looking so guilty here:)

So I had a very successful weekend and I am looking forward to two days this week of no students due to Election and Parent/Teacher Conference day! Happy November- the official start of the holiday season:)

How was your Halloween? Ever bought a new car?

Hope you had a great 4th of July!

More pictures from Duck to tide you and myself over until my next trip in 10 days:)!

Perfect weather

Parade!

My motto:)

No lie- a shark was caught on the beach I was at on the 4th. It was small and was sent back in the water, but definitely kept everyone on alert! I just ran in and out when I needed to go in.

The sound- on my running route every morning and my evening walk/ice cream stop every night:)

Sunsets never get old!

Beach at night is my favorite.

Tan, relaxed and happy. Take me back!

How was your holiday weekend?

Relationships

It's Friday, February the 13th yet all around is LOVE because VALENTINE'S day is tomorrow:)

I have spoken in the past of how Valentine's Day doesn't mean much to me in terms of feeling like I need to be in a relationship. It honestly doesn't bother me one way or the other. I actually view the day and time surrounding it as a time to show everyone around you how much they mean to you (I also have awesome friends who throw Valentine's Day gatherings so they can bring all the people they care about together)!

I wrote a few years ago about Valentine's Day during a particularly hard time for me. I said:

What is my ultimate goal or wish? Is it a certain job, travel, money, or family?  I couldn't help but think that it isn't something or someone: instead it is some people. Not necessarily romantic companions but people to share it all with; the ups and downs, the excitement, the worry, the fear, the difficulty and the successes. It all should not be tackled alone. No matter what you do can be made fun or special with those people beside you ... I am lucky that many people in my life can do that.

My friends, all of you, are magnificent people who touch the lives of many, including me. I am lucky to know each and everyone of you. Because I think that true love, true soul mates, are those that grow up with you and stick by you and are your partners in crime even when all the complexities and distances of life get in the way. They are who you know at seven and seventy-seven, some for only a short while and some for your whole life, some to help you through one part and others to stand by you through it all. You may not live with them or know them your whole life, you may not gaze into each other's eyes and share romantic moments and feelings (though that could be argued), but the love you have for your friends can often be the most intimate kind, because it is truly non-binding and without expectations: one done out of pure choice and love.

I love my friends. I look forward to a life with them. They are my constant and true valentines.

I had to reinstate that quote from my baby 24-year-old-self (wasn't I so wise?), because it still remains SO TRUE to my life today. My friends are the loves of my life at this point. No matter who comes and goes romantically, friends are who I could not and would not want to live this life without.

Relationships are tough. They leave you giddy, excited, happy and nervous at some times and uncertain, anxious, sad and angry at others. Often they can leave you questioning your worth, your goals, and your values despite your head telling you the contrary. Leading and feeling with your heart is such an emotional roller coaster. We all know that what is important to you should never be impacted by anyone else, and how you feel about yourself should always remain the most important. Though that is easier said than done!

I have spoken a lot over the past few months of self-worth, life values, DOING YOU, and living in accordance with what you feel is right at the time. I am constantly learning how to navigate the many facets of my life, including work, school, marathon training, friends, family and relationships, and I am a work in progress. But what I have learned is important, mainly that: sometimes letting go is the only answer, quitting is actually winning, and falling down is the only way to pick yourself back up stronger and smarter than before.  *Tell my teenage heart this and she would roll her eyes at you*

So on this Valentine's Day, I don't pretend to be the expert on any relationships, but I do know one thing: the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous. (thank you, Carrie Bradshaw...my relationship guru).

Happy Valentine's Day today and all year round- surround yourself with people who love you. And love yourself and all your faults, no matter what.

Christmas 2014

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas! I started the day with an easy 4 mile run, opened gifts, went to a movie (Theory of Everything- it was wonderful!) and had a delicious dinner. I went back to my place last night to organize and get some gifts set up. My favorite gifts of the day were a fitbit and some running stuff, but everything was great!

I am tempting to take more pictures so here is the hogdepodge from my phone!

Oh how times have changed...running before breakfaat and gifts are opened!

Cats live such a tough life watching gifts being opened...

My awesome stocking:)

The tree before the festivities began!

I am heading to see "Into the Woods" this afternoon before a low key night of resting up for my long run tomorrow! I have slept SoMUCH this week...I am hopeful I can kick my butt into gear tomorrow for a great run before heading to the National Harbor! Sometimes if I get too much sleep I have a hard time running...who knows why!

How was your Christmas? Favorite gift or food?

Do you have a harder time running when you have been lazy or get too much sleep?

Early Christmas Gift

Nothing like a day of laziness to get myself in the Christmas spirit! Yesterday, after a busy weekend and out of town short trip, I was EXHAUSTED. I rarely have a day of nothing because I usually can't stand to sit still, but I stayed in my sweatpants all day yesterday (well, until 6 PM when I had a condo association meeting) and watched too much TV. My friend and I were scheduled to meet up, but we both felt too lazy, so we just texted. #firstworldproblems

After my morning run (yes, I did do that at least), Santa aka Amazon came to my door with an AWESOME Christmas gift- a Roku!

Now I can watch Netflix on my TV! Score. Perfect for my lazy day and super-easy to set up. Thanks to my bro and sis-in-law!

I hung out with this cutie on the couch all day. He is an awesome snuggle buddy.

I watched 90210 (Christmas episode marathon) and The X Files...David Duchovny, why won't you love me? Any fans know what season this picture is from?

I feel much better today in terms of energy. I think I needed a day to rest from my increased running, traveling and busy holiday schedule. Socializing is exhausting even for an extrovert. I will head over to my parents this afternoon for a low-key Christmas. Just us this Christmas as my brothers are with their in-laws. Adulthood changes things! I am excited for a visit to the National Harbor this weekend, though,

Merry Christmas!!!
